I would like to ask if any additional funding is available for hearing
impaired / deaf Higher Education students. The Disabled Students Allowance,
Non Medical Helpers Allowance is currently £10, 755. A Full Time HE student
attending 12 hours lectures per week would only be able to afford to receive
under 4 hours support per week. Put another way the cost of two signers
(interpreters) and a notetaker would cost approximately £36,000 per year but
there are only funds of £10,755 available, a shortfall of £25,000. The deaf
student/s would therefore be unable to have the same opportunities as other
'disabled' students. They would not be able to attend lectures without this
support and consequently unable to undertake an HE course. Is the Government
going to address this issue ? Are there any other funds available to enable
a deaf student to undertake a degree ?
