Although most of what is being said is very valid we still need to respect
those students who are independent about their dyslexia, but still request
basic proof reading without tuition. If we refuse to offer proofreading
without tuition then aren't we prejudicing these individuals?
Regarding PG students as proof readers, it would be important for anybody
being used to be screened for quality of ability and availability regardless
of their background. I'm sure that this would have been Carol's initial
intention.

Subject: Re: Proof reading for students with dyslexia
As a lecturer I would never proof-read for a student, nor did any other
lecturers.
Most lecturers are willing to glance through a draft essay to check that the
question set is the one being addressed, citation is being used
appropriately, the logical flow of ideas appears to be sound, and that the
essay is not too 'thin'. That can be done in a couple of minutes.
When you have a class of 183 for just one of the modules you are responsible
for,[I remember the size very clearly], time for detailed guidance is
limited. This is where detailed guidance on assessment criteria can be very
important, allied with the selective use of examplars of previous student
work. This aspect of guidance is often overlooked - but is vital - and
helps all students.
The use of a proof-reader would only be justified, in my opinion, when it is
a significant assesment criteria, such as for a Ph.D. disseration, which
should be of a publishable standard. In such cases, and only when the
disability justifies it, a professional proof-reader may be employed via the
DSA.
In other cases,[99.99% of student work], it is worth while reminding
lecturers of one of the Singleton recommendations - dyslexic students should
not be penalised for spelling and grammar.
