Arthur Howell wrote about the Inland Revenue's requests.
My immediate (wry) thoughts went along these lines:
If you have an informal arrangement with the Inland Revenue could
I stop you passing my data (were I a license holder) under the
right to stop direct marketing?
If you give IR data about me they may well send me some of their
pretty brown envelopes offering their services to relieve me of
money. That might be construed as direct marketing which I can
stop. Then they have to resort to their lawful request!
Perhaps we should all suggest to IR that we take a less formal
approach about paying our taxes!
My more serious comment would be that I would only accept to pass
them data if they justify it through formal use of the Taxes Act.
However, the wording Arthur gives appears to make the Act apply
to individual cases rather than block requests so I would want to
check the Act myself or take legal advice before complying.
