We are police checking all our learning facilitaors because of the new reg. about working with vulnerable adults. We decided it would be more effective to get all the support workers checked. Human Resources is coordinating this, as with any other staff.
In relation to the student 'sacking' his support workers. Because we employ them here, students and LFs have to abide by employment regulations eg. 4 weeks notice either way, some attempt to negotiate the difficulties etc. This is explained to both parties at the beginning both verbally and in written form. Students have to realise (and usually do) that with support comes some responsibility, courtesy and common sense also come into it. Even if they employed the support worker direct, they woul still have to abide by certain regulations.

We have a student who is blind who has a support worker for 25 hours a
week, in the past year he has had 3 different people, every few months
he gets bored, sacks them and then comes and demands that we find
another one for him, he also insists that his support workers are
masters IT level. I won't go in to all the details of the ongoing
arguements but when he got bored with the latest support worker he
demanded that he should have a police check and was extremely concerned
when the support worker refused. The support worker is one of our 3rd
year students who has been note-taking for other students in the past
year. He is now complaining that all support workers should be police
checked as he is a vulnerable adult, I have never known police checks to
be carried out anywhere else or am I wrong. My senior management have
asked could I check this.
Any views.
I feel he is an adult, no personal care involved only academic support
but he can be classed as 'vulnerable' and will use this when he takes
further action.
