A disabled student, who has a "24 hour care" package and intensive study
support at UCN hopes to be able to participate in a 5-month exchange visit
to an American university. He has now been advised that he (or his father)
would be required to employ the support workers in America, institution,
including taking out insurance cover etc. The student's father is unwilling
to take on this responsibility. The Disabilities Adviser at the American
university is willing to recruit these staff locally, but it appears that
the university will not employ them on his behalf. I am investigating the
possibility of UCN employing these support workers in USA and extending our
idemnity insurance to cover them, but anticipate that it is unlikely to be a
realistic option.
Has anyone on the list experienced a similar situation, and if so how was
this resolved?
many thanks,
Clare
