Thursday 28th February 2002
9.30 a.m. - 4.00 p.m.
Burwalls Conference Centre,
University of Bristol
About this Course:
Although an increasing number of dyslexic readers are using libraries, they often face a range of barriers, not all of them obvious. Are there any ways in which libraries can become more dyslexia-friendly?
On this course, participants will explore:
· Current theories about dyslexia
· The way dyslexia affects the use of library services
· Ways of empowering dyslexic readers
· Developing good practice guidelines
· How to improve staff awareness
The emphasis of the course will be on exchanging information and learning from each other. There will also be plenty of structured exercises which it is hoped participants will be able to replicate for their colleagues. The day will be supported with plenty of handouts and material which can be photocopied.
This course will involve:
· presentations
· small and large group activities
· interactive sessions with plenty of opportunities to learn from each other's professional experiences
· time to share individual ideas and experiences in a non-threatening atmosphere
· the opportunity for short and long-term action planning
Your Tutor:
Christine Chubb is dyslexic. Though she often finds them confusing and frustrating places, she has been using libraries all her life and for a time worked in one. She supports dyslexic students at the University of Bristol and is co-founder and organiser of SWADI, the South West Adult Dyslexia Initiative.
