Unfortunately our local NHS equipment loan centre is not willing to provide
equipment for out-of-county students, who usually need to keep the original
loan item at home from use if they go home for the weekend &/or vacations.

We have found that, working with the student's OT or social
worker, it has been possible to obtain specialist equipment for daily living
from the appropriate area health authority, to be returned when the student
no
longer needs it.

I fully agree about adapted toilets, shower seats
etc,
but have reservations
about buying expensive items like electric beds.
Can
anyone advise on
cheaper alternatives (that would also be easier to
store when no longer
required) such as special mattresses to be used on a
standard bed base?

Kirsty,
The University would be expected to provide (and by
implication fund)
adapted facilities or minor adaptations such as
shower
seats. None of these
can be funded via DSA and they would not be the
responsibility of social
services. The same applies to any Residential School
facilities you may
offer away from the immediate campus. The OU does
this
for about 1,500
students on it's residential programme each year.
What
your insitution can
be expected to reasonably provide will depend on
it's
level of funding for
students with disabilities.
