I fully agree about adapted toilets, shower seats etc, but have reservations
about buying expensive items like electric beds. Can anyone advise on
cheaper alternatives (that would also be easier to store when no longer
required) such as special mattresses to be used on a standard bed base?

Kirsty,
The University would be expected to provide (and by implication fund)
adapted facilities or minor adaptations such as shower seats. None of these
can be funded via DSA and they would not be the responsibility of social
services. The same applies to any Residential School facilities you may
offer away from the immediate campus. The OU does this for about 1,500
students on it's residential programme each year. What your insitution can
be expected to reasonably provide will depend on it's level of funding for
students with disabilities.
