As I understand it, in most universities, there would normally be no appeal
against the previous marks (if you are talking about June 2001 or before)
this is because the time limit will have passed. You would need to check the
college regulations to find out whether this is true at your institution.
What should happen is that, when assessing the final level of degree that
the student receives the fact that she has dyslexia should be taken into
account. As far as I am aware most universities will have a system where 40%
indicates a 3rd, 50% a 2:2 etc. but they also will say in their rules
something along the lines of "the mark obtained is only a guide". This
allows them to award a higher degree than would normally be indicated by the
marks. If this is the case in your institution I would advise the student,
around about exam time, to contact her personal tutor in order to ask
him/her to make sure that the board takes this into account, and also writes
to the chair of the board.

Subject: Retrospective assessment
Dear all,
I think this may have been rasied before, but I cannot recall the
outcome.
A consensus would be helpful for the following :
A student (third year and recently diagnosed with dyslexia) has
asked about appealing re. her previous marks. Is there an
understood ruling about this? Is there written guidance?
Thanks v. much.
