LEA Officer in distress....
I'm aware there are 2 schools of thought on the prescription of glasses for
students with scotopic sensitivity/Irlen's syndrome. Some, like
Tintavision, prescribe coloured overlays, saying the colour response can
change. Others, like UMIST, prescibe glasses. In Manchester, we pay for
either overlays or glasses (payment in full for lenses and up to £50 for
frames).
I've recently set up a regional working group of LEA officers on DSAs to
try and standardise policy across the North West (a girl can dream).
Unfortunately, one (not wholly unexpected) member of the working group
feels unable to sign up to this policy of paying for glasses at the moment
and has basically asked for a full defence of our position, in writing. My
own feeling is that the pament for glasses can be defended because of the
increase in necessary reading on a course and glasses are far more
versatile than overlays for the various teaching and learning methods on
offer.
Is there anyone who could give me further information on this subject?
Many thanks
Kath
