I'm personally far from satisfied with AOL myself. But it does not have an
obvious inactivity timer but it does appear to cut back on its own bandwidth
at times when AOL thinks demand will be light (ie when the US are asleep)n
and so early morning access can be worse that earlty evening access.
By the same token only 2 hours ago a student told me he had had difficulty
access Freeserve and was now using Blueyonder which he said cost £12 a month
and in his words 'gave fast access and reliabilty' I have not tested this
claim.
It's a dodgey business actually recommending an ISP. The original enquiry was
about costs, this is a pretty uniform £180 per year for 56k modem access. I
usually leave it at that and let the student choose, most offer a free trial.
