Sarah,
Hyper terminal has settings that enable you to see local text
echoed. Open a connection, in the dial up dialogue box select the
modify button and then select the settings tab. You will see a
couple of things in here that you may find useful. You can choose
the emulation type, the cursor type and the one you are interested
in, the ascii settings. Here you can select local echo. However,
text only seems to be echoed on the remote machine not on the
host machine, so if your colleague calls you this will work ok.
