Most rental companies are business focussed and, as such, do not
represent good value when constructing rental quotations.
Microlink offer a DSA student oriented rental scheme, the details of which
are on their web site (www.microlinkpc.co.uk). The maximum rental period
is around 6 months as they feel the (brand new) machine still has a
reasonable resale value up to that point. Any longer and the rental gets
much closer to the outright purchase price as the residual value of the
machine is proportionately much lower.
From Christmas this is a common and cost-effective recommendation for
final year students, though intentions for post-graduate study should also
be represented. However, anecdotal evidence suggests the majority seem
come to an arrangement with their LEA where they contribute their own
funds to the rental fee in order to make an outright purchase.
