Mary,
We do not have rooms in halls specificly designed for people with sensory
impairments. However the following features have been welcomed by blind
students:
* self-containg kitchenette (difficulty sharing kitchen facilities if need
to know exacly where things are)
* additional lighting in kitchen area
* braille markings on microwave etc
* extra shelf space for Braille books
* more desk space for bulky computer equipment
* sufficient space for guide dog (and nearby pen)
* internet access in room
* individual doorbell on room door (student was unable to identify whether
people were knocking on his or a neighbouring door)
For deaf students we have installed Deaf Alerter systems in halls, with
individual alerters, night cradle and Xenon light provided in student's
room/flat to aleret the student to fire alarms. Also flashing beacon to
indicate when someone knocks on room door (our halls don't have door bells).
Minicom or BT phone line for the student's own minicom are also appreciated.
If a TV is provided, this should offer teletext and loop system (but I
regeret that we don't provide this!)
I would be interested to have a summary of the recommendations you receive.
best wishes,
Clare

Subject: halls of residence
Hello all
We are due to refurbish one of our halls and will adapt some rooms
for students with sensory impairment as well as mobility
impairment.
The project manager is interested in knowing about halls in other
Universities where rooms for students with sensory or mobility
impairments has been designed to a high standard, and where
student feedback has been positive.
If you have halls which are examples of good standards I would be
very pleased to hear from you off line. Please reply to
