Here at UCLan we have "Deaf Alerter" pagers set up for use in teaching buildings and student accommodation - and they also replace PA announcements about library closing, etc. They seem to work well enough - but a disadvantage is that they sometimes page students about alarms in buildings other than the one they happen to be in at the time. It's also a little disconcerting to see all the deaf students suddenly get up and troop out before the fire drill alarm sounds, and some of them now have a reputation as fortune-tellers.

Try contacting North Tyneside College in Newcastle (ken.
[log in to unmask]). They have had a system of
pagers for some time and use them not just for fire alarm
purposes (for staff, students - including evening classes)
but also as emergency alarms.
