Hi Alison
It's good to see that you are new in post at Surrey and will be
co-ordinating further training. You may be aware that Karen Robson and I
carried out training in July and September at your Institution (organised by
Marion Wilkes).
It's interesting to see that you are in L&T. When I started at UWIC two
years ago I was initially in L&T and working very closely with the
Disability Department. Now I am in the Disability Department and still
working alongside L&T on Widening Access type issues - accessible curriculum
audits based on the Teachability project etc. I also work alongside the
Dyslexia Support Tutor who supervises 10 freelance tutors. He tells me that
for dyslexia tuition a tutor should have a minimum of the certificate in
SLDD (Specific Learning Difficulties Dyslexia) or preferably, the higher
level - the Diploma which enables the tutor to carry out assessments.
I hope that this has answered at least a little of your queries.
Regards
Carol

Hello everyone
I have just joined the list having recently taken on a new post as
Learning & Teaching Co-ordinator at my institution. It's a job made of
many parts, one of which is looking after Learning Support for students
with dyslexia, which has raised all sorts of questions.
I'd really like to share some of these with you and hope it isn't bad
manners to ask for help when barely through the door!
One is, how can I clarify any legal position concerning the level of tutor
qualifcation required for suppoting students receiving DSA. One camp has
advised me it's up to the institution, another that tutors should have RSA
diploma or equivalent and anything lower is not acceptable. Does anyone
know?
Another is, I am arranging a programme of staff development including
additional sessions on SENDA ( we have run some already); can anyone
recommend good staff developers who would be able to provide such training
for us?
Final question is to do with building better relationships between
academic staff and support tutors so that they can collaborate more
positively - can anyone point me towards existing good practice so I can
see how these relationships have been handled elsewhere?
many thanks - and apologies for the length of my message!
best wishes
Alison James
