We have not experienced this problem, and have received written confirmation
from the NHS Student Grants Unit that they will fund needs assessments for
two students who started Diploma in Nursing in January 2002.

Subject: DSA for Nurses
All
Has anybody out there come across the issue of Feb intake nurses not being
eligible for DSA until Feb 2003 due to the way that their academic year is
recorded? (See email below for explanation.)
"We have a February intake for nurses as well as September. Feb. intake
people are technically in sessional year 2001/02 until February 2003. This
cuts them out of DSA until February because it has been awarded from session
2002/03. So while nurses who began in September 2001 are now eligible,
those who began in February 2002 are not.
This seems to me to be the most bizarre bit of bureaucratic nonsense.
Either you admit nursing students in from a particular date or you don't...
I've checked with SAAS, They say they are tied by the rules, but we can
appeal. This will affect a number of our students and I'm advising anyone
in this trap to contact their MSPs. Any other advice?"
Thanks
Jenni
