Dear Caroline,
One of the ongoing problems we have found is for students with psychiatric
disabilities required to do placements in other institutions and concerns
about professional registration. This is particularly salient for
psychology, social work and allied health students.

Subject: health professions and disability
Dear all
I am conducting some preliminary research about entry to the health
professions for disabled people. It may become a fully-funded project and
publication if Skill is successful in getting funding. At this stage I am
feeling my way, part information gathering, part lobbying, and doing this by
contacting institutions and, in due course, professional bodies.
The number of professions to be covered is not finally decided, but the
following, in approximate order or priority, may be included:
* nurses
* doctors
* physiotherapists
* radiographers
* occupational therapists
* pharmacists
* osteopaths
* dieticians
* midwives
* dentists
* speech and language therapists?
* paramedics?
* psychologists?
* any more?
At this stage I am looking for fresh examples of issues around access to the
professions, and the courses that lead to them, for students with
disabilities. Eventually we may wish to have full case studies and photos of
students who have succeeded in overcoming barriers (if there are any... - at
Skill we tend not to here about these cases) but at this stage just
anonymous examples will be fine. If anyone else is doing work on this area
perhaps you could let me know so i don't duplicate your efforts.
Thanks in advance
Caroline
