Once the allowance is used up there is little that can be done to pay for
more support, However it may be worth having a friendly chat with the LEA
Officer concerned to see if it is possible to be a little 'creative' with
the way in which funds have been used to date. For example, can anything
be charged in a previous academic year in which the General Allowance
wasn't fully used?
Of course, this may be seen by some officers as bending the rules
somewhat (if not breaking them completely) but in the past, particularly
at this time of year, I know that I've been able to make the most of the
previous academic year's allowances by considering purchase order dates,
invoice dates etc.
Alternatively, the LEA might not need a full assessment to be done if the
additional needs aren't too excessive - again this is very much down to
the officer concerned but a letter from yourself outlining the needs may
suffice.
I would, however, raise the question as to whether a stethoscope for a
med student is a disability related need...

Subject: DSA Allowance
Clarification needed on a DSA issue please!!
A 1 st year med student has recently completed a 3 year BSC degree in
Cambridge during which time she received DSA.
She is hearing impaired and will need specific equipment in order to
carry
out particular duties i.e. stethoscope etc.
I have spoken to the LEA and explained this & indicated that she would
benefit from another assessment due to the course being so prescriptive
etc. However it appears she has used up most of her allowance and
therefore having another assessment would mean very little remaining
funds
to purchase additional things.
Has anybody else been in a similar situation - what was the outcome???
and
have you any suggestions on what I should do.
Thank you in advance
