An introduction to the Braille Music Code
for those who teach music to visually impaired people
Musicians in Focus are delighted to invite the renowned Braille music
specialist Bettye Krolick to present a one-day seminar hosted by the Royal
College of Music on Tuesday 8 October 2002.
The aim of the day is to introduce Braille music notation to music teachers
and educators with no previous knowledge, many of whom will be surprised to
discover that they will be able to read basic Braille music by the end of
the day.
Bettye Krolick, a professional violinist, gained her degree from the Eastman
School of Music, Rochester, New York. A certified music Braillist, she was
president of the National Braille Association (USA) from 1987 to 1989 and
then BANA (Braille Authority of North America) Chairman of Music Braille
from 1991 to 1998.
She is currently BANA Music Representative to the World Blind Union, an
informal Beta tester for software related to Braille music and has given
workshops, seminars and short courses since 1975. Her publications include
How To Read Braille Music, Dictionary of Braille Music Signs, and the New
International Manual of Braille Music Notation. All publications are
available in Braille and in print.
There will also be a short demonstration of relevant music technology by
Jacqueline Clifton (Director of Musicians in Focus and Research Fellow in
Music & Visual Impairment at the RCM). George Bell, Managing Director of
Techno Vision Systems Ltd (distributor of the Goodfeel Braille Music
Translation software) will also be in attendance.
The day will commence with registration and coffee at 10.30am and will
finish at 4.30pm. A buffet lunch will be provided, and the cost of lunch is
included in the attendance fee of £10 per person (payable in advance).
