This used to be a classic information security risk- but I hadn't realized
that such machines are still churning away! The cheapest solution would be
to scrap the fax machine (the rolls for which are getting inordinately
expensive these days) and replace it with a plain-paper variety.

Subject: Readable information on fax rolls
Many fax machines produce both a positive and negative of documents
received. The positive is taken away (hopefully) by the intended recipient
and the negative is kept in the machine as waste until the roll is changed.
I am told that in many cases this copy is clearer to read than the positive.
The problem is how to dispose of the waste roll on which information can
still be read. It could be argued that a fax is not a good way of
transmitting personal data, but an organisation has no control over what is
sent to it. Due to the make up of these rolls they will not shred and I am
told that they contain substances that classify them as "special waste" due
to the environmental impact of incinerating them.
I would be interested to hear if anyone has identified this problem and
found a solution.
