EU COMMISSION SEEKS VIEWS ON DATA PROTECTION DIRECTIVE

The European Commission yesterday launched an online survey to gauge
public opinion about the operation of the EU Data Protection Directive.
The survey is part of the EU's "Interactive Policy Making Initiative"
and the results will be reflected in the Commission's report on the Data
Protection Directive which is due out at the end of the year.

Among the issues addressed by the survey are whether or not employers
should be able to view email sent by employees, whether businesses
should obtain prior explicit consent before direct-marketing to
individuals, and how best to approach the issue of 'invisible'
collection of personal data through the use of cookies.

In order to solicit a wide range of opinions, two surveys have been
issued - one aimed at businesses and one at private
individuals. The surveys may be accessed at
http://europa.eu.int/yourvoice/dataprotection_en.htm until September 15,
2002.
