Our Bereavement Services Section (BSS) (burials and cremations! to the
uninitiated) do not deal direct with members of the public direct (not the
dead ones obviously - they would require a medium for that!!), but the
funeral directors act as a go between.
The BSS have forms that require completion, but this is usually done, with
direction from the funeral director. One of the parts of the form is consent
for the BSS to contact the bereaved direct with details of the Book of
Remeberence and other functions. Since changing the form, and adding this
consent, the funeral directors are advising the bereaved to fill in the form
and sign for no further contact. This is causing some distress, as they are
now getting contacts from people, suggesting that they would have like an
entry in the Book of Remeberence, but knew nothing of the facility.
Does anyone have any suggestions to get this information to the bereaved
without breaching the Act?
On a similar note, I noticed a few weeks ago that my mortgage payments had
gone up by £50 per month. Smelling a rat I rang my Building Society, (who
shall remain nameless, but it rhymes with Jaliphacks) after much "not this
department, I'll transfer you!"-ing, I eventually discovered that the fixed
rate I had been on, had expired, fine! "Did no-one think to let me know?" -
"not this department, I'll just transfer you" - again!! To then be told,
"you must have ticked the NO MARKETING box on the form! So we can't send you
any details of our products!". Could they (should they) have sent the
details about my mortgage without the marketing information?? Obviously not!
