Paul,
The limitation you describe is what you would expect following your contact
with the system.
The wider hidden uses of data are the issues which need clearly identifying
in the privacy statement.
The data controller of the site appears to be PITO, indicated by the
statement on the initial page.
Is the statement of use accurate then, or is there a data processor
agreement in existence with each Chief Constable?
Who is the data controller? It does not appear at all clear from the site
pages I have visited.
Is the statement reflective of the use of the data, or is it only reflective
of the immediate perceptions of the site host?

I would suggest that it would limit to police activities, how does this
compare then to the practice of supplying these details to the Victim
Support Service, who send a standard letter to victims. I caused an
almighty fuss lately with this issue after my house was bugled, and Victim
Support received by data.

Subject: On-Line Crime reporting
During some research I visited the http://www.police.uk/ website and was
puzzled to note there was no privacy notice link from the site.
Tracking through the site to the on-line crime reporting section (the Minor
Crime link) the statement:-
"Submitting personal information about yourself (such as name and address)
to this website will result in those details only being used for official
purposes related to the site, we will not pass them on to any third party.
This complies with the Data Protection Act 1998, details of which can be
found at www.dpr.gov.uk <link.asp?url=www.dpr.gov.uk>"
appeared, a few more pages eventually indicated a secure server was to be
used. I did not proceed further as I had no crime to report.
Question: Would the statement above limit the use of the data provided via
this site to police forces only?
