But why should I have to do that? As I interpret the law I should have the
right to opt out as soon as I enter into the contract. Clearly the first
part of the statement is stating the obvious - to complete the contract with
me (supplying the goods etc.) they have to pass my details to their agents
who are actually doing the work. However I view the second part of the
statement as direct marketing, pure and simple. As such I should have the
choice of opting in or out.

I tend to view this sort of activity as " you dont get something for
nothing!". Much the same as Loyalty cards effectively buying your personal
data.
You could always try signing up and then at a later date ( there are no time
limits in the DP Act), ask to be removed from the direct marketing element.
