When sending this reply I received a similar message from more than one
recipient. Out of Office etc messages are the very devil. We can
potentially break the law by incautious use of them, especially if we give
out another person's details

I would say it is borderline. It depends on whether the real Ray Bloggs has
given permission for data to be divulged to third parties (or even exported
from the EEA). If so then I am content. If not I would not be at all
content and if I were Ray Bloggs would be escalating this further to have it
stopped.

Subject: Delivery failure message
Dear All,
I'm the list-owner of another jiscmail list, and have just received the
following in a delivery failure message.
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software (Exim).
A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its

[log in to unmask]
The following text was generated during the delivery attempt:
------ [log in to unmask] ------
Your message:-
To: r.g.bloggs
could not be delivered, because:-
r.g.bloggs
is not a registered mail name. The name, listed below, may be
the one you require:-
R Bloggs Lecturer, Mxxxxxxxxxxx
email: [log in to unmask]
Should you require further assistance, or if no email address
is listed, please contact [log in to unmask]
Further information can be found at http://www.xxxx.ac.uk/search/
I've replaced the real name of the person and the institution. They did
NOT identify the correct person.
Do list members think that this complies with data protection principles?
