Thanks for that Tim
For everyone I am on Holiday from today for a week, however don't look at
192.com or visit my house as I'm there, that is unless you want to discuss
DP or FOI on my patio.

Subject: "Out of Office" (no, I am in mine)
Having sent a few messages to this list over the past few days, some days of
which reflect vacations in academe, and some of which show your simple
business trips, I now have a wonderful picture of personal telephone numbers
and working habits and practices from out of office messages and rule based
replies.
If I were to combine the personal phone numbers and "I am away from the
office, yippeeee!" messages etc. with visits to http://www.192.com to find
out where you live, I am sure I could enjoy a fine harvest of consumer goods
from your homes, were I of nefarious intent.
The mailing list is archived online and is simple to catch up on if you turn
it off. http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/user-manual/summary-user-commands.htm
gives us all access to the totality of JISCMail commands, and lets us turn
messages on and off at will. The command is a simple "set * nomail" sent to
[log in to unmask] (do it when you set your "out of Office" or
equivalent message, and "set * mail" when you return.
Put simply, you are choosing by default to pass on details to the world that
you never realised you were passing on, some of which may do you real
personal harm. In the jobs that we do, especially those in the public
service, it is perfectly conceivable that we can offend a malicious person
and be victimised.
And yes, I am also bound to forget one day.
