Well, without revealing anything that hasn't been published elsewhere
<grin>, I can tell you that the Government's Protective Marking System (PMS)
is a framework for assessing the value of sensitive material. It was
designed to help protect our country's assets from threats - both internal
and external - and includes instructions for handling and transmission
affected assets.
Protective marking is a relatively new term, which has come into greater
public use through its promotion within BS7799. The Government's current PMS
came about following a review of protective security arrangements throughout
government and brings together:
- National Security Classification System
(Restricted, Confidential, Secret and Top Secret - these terms have been
retained)
- Privacy Marking System
(Commercial in Confidence, Staff in Confidence - these terms have been
abolished)
It is reasonably safe to assume that the privacy marking system now equates
to a level of "Restricted - Personnel" and, to my way of thinking, this
devalues personal and commercial information. However, I didn't make the
rules. :-(
