Rebecca,
Is the Benefits Agency listed as a disclosure in the notification? If not,
then any disclosure would be a criminal offence unless an exemption applies.
If yes, then is the disclosure consistent with the original purpose,
probably not. Breach of first principle if you disclose unless students
were advised when they enrolled that information would be passed to the
Benefits Agency.

Subject:
A student has interrupted his course from University, but has told the
Benefits Agency that he has withdrawn. The Benefits Agency have
contacted us for confirmation that the student has withdrawn. Can we
correct their records without telling the student? Surely, yes as long
as we are not processing sensitive data.
Any advice gratefully received!
Rebecca
