I am sure that this subject has cropped up on many occasions in the
past, but would be grateful if you could give me your thoughts on
this scenario.
My company, which specialises in personal finance , is looking to
become active in direct mail marketing to our customers. On all newish
and future applications we have given the customer an opt out
facility on their finance application forms and this information is
collected to enable us to screen out those individuals who do not want
to be marketed.
My query, however, lies with existing/previous customers where the
question of opting out was neither asked nor recorded.
My thoughts are that as long as we are marketing our own customers
with services which they would expect us to offer (e.g. further
finance ) we can continue to do so without having to obtain permission up
front. No marketing of any third party services would be involved.
I would look to recommend that on the marketing mailshot the
opportunity to opt out is given on the leaflet sent to them. I am also
aware that it would be "good " practice to screen through the mailing
preference company.
The alternative argument being put forward is that we should be
asking for their consent to market first before sending any
marketing leaflets out.
Any thoughts would be welcome.
Sue
