Hello Duncan
My former employer (a local authority) had a staff member who was deaf. A
sign language interpreter was brought in when we had staff meetings,
courses, etc attended by the deaf employee. We used to pay the service
provider (usually the RNID) and claim back the amounts from the (then)
Department of Employment. This was because we operated a supported
employment scheme under the Disabled Persons (Employment) Act 1944. The
same scheme also paid for the installation and maintenance of minicom
equipment for the deaf employee.
The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 makes employers and others liable for
ensuring that disabled people are not disadvantaged in any way as a result
of their disability. I don't know the detail of this Act, but there could
be some provision for service providers to ensure disabled people are not
discriminated against, eg provide sign language interpreters for deaf
people.
Hope this helps

Subject: Data Protection Act 1998 for Disabled People - Mmm?
Dear mailbase,
The things you get asked by clients!
"We have a deaf patient coming in for a consultation at the beginning
of March. [private medical company] have rung to say that under the
Data Protection Act
for Disabled People, disabled people do not incur charges & they was
ringing to check that we would pay for the interpreter. This has me
completely stumped, I have not received any guidance on this can you
help or give me any advice. Thanks"
OK - there is no Data Protection Act 1998 for Disabled People that I am
aware of, but the issue of who pays for an interpreter may be covered
under some other Disability legislation. Could the accumulated wisdom
of the List help here. Please!
