I felt the original message time periods were about right for institutions
like ours. The 6 month period for unsuccessful candidates covers the period
for potential litigation, and we know that we are requested for references
on students (and ex-students find this very helpful, as do their employers)
for a considerable period of time. I recently gave a reference for an
ex-student, at his request, who left in 1994, whose new employer needed to
cover a particular period.
