My thoughts
Why so long?
DPA 98 simply states no longer than is necessary for purpose.
If a reference is taken to appoint someone to a position what period does it
need to be held to support or recind that appointment. If there is no active
review program or intention to do so for example supported by an HR policy
is the data holding excessive to purpose?
Taking the simple view do not all organisations use reference data for the
same purpose. If so why do some retain longer than others. There may of
course be some statutory obligation to do so in differing sectors but I
suggest that this is not as common as may be believed.
If anyone knows of any UK legislation specifically stipulating mandatory
retention periods Id be interested in receiving the name of the legislation.
Happy New Year all. Heres to 2002 and debates to come ;-)
