IMHO Tim has made a valid DP point.
Many, may belong to different newsgroups, within which, routinely,
people do not use their own/proper e-mail address. In considering the
debates about that practice the reasons are numerous but, protecting the
individual and stopping spam are common ones. (For individual could also be
read organisation).
I have noticed before, even within this mailgroup, that some persons have
subscribed/unsubscribed using 'false details'. I suspect that is not an
uncommon thing.
Extending Tim's point; would it assist open and frank discussion within this
mailbase if 'false details' were used? Or would it merely complicate what
is already a complicated area?
It seems to me that this particular e-mail sent freely by myself, to this
group, and its archive, is being sent on the understanding that it will be
used for 'data protection purposes', within the membership of the group and
by any person who may access the archive. If another organisation
intercepts the e-mail or accesses the archive for other purposes, they will
have to rely on legislative provisions, and DP exemptions.
It does seem to me though, that Tim's point may be addressed in two ways.
Those individuals who wish to remain anon could join and partake in the list
using a pseudonym;
AND
action is taken against any organisation who may misuse the data held within
the archive.
Does JISC have a policy to investigate and take action on potential misuse
of data they control?
I to consider the administration of this list to be excellent, as such my
views and observations are intended to engender fruitful discussion.
