Dear All
A similar scheme to the one in Dudley is in operation in Chesterfield, it is
called "thumbs up" and shoppers are "invited" to give a non-ink thumbprint on
the back of credit/debit card slips and cheques. It is not compulsory and is
based on the "failed" operation in Bluewater where (it was reported) less
than 10% of the stores there actually signed up to the scheme. Even fewer
than that have signed up in Chesterfield, I believe, and those that have the
pads do not ask for dabs at busy times (incidentally this is when most stolen
cards and cheques are used).
I found out in advance which stores are signed up and checked their DPA
registrations. Most are not registered to process for "crime detection and
prevention" nor to hold "physical details" of their customers (does that mean
their CCTV systems are in breach as well?). If you gave a thumbprint in
these stores you could be helping them to break the law. Needless to say, I
always refuse to give a print. The stores know that if they refuse to sell
me the item that I will go to another store which hasn't joined the scheme.
Hence the reason it will fail, just as all the others do, but obviously the
company selling these pads has to propogate the myth that it works.
