I'm sure these requirements could be fulfilled. I'm also sure we can't do it
for free. I'm sure too that we all appreciate the usefulness of this
discussion list, and the efforts of its administrator. A bit of junk mail is
IMHO a small price to pay. I think the list is wholly compliant with the
DPA, because the policy of public access to the archives is known to the
contributors (and is how many contributors got to know about it in the first
place).
On another matter, how do you vet "bona fide interest"? There's nothing to
stop some miscreant joining the list simply for the purposes of trawling the
archives for email addresses...

Subject: Re: Update on mail list administration for
archiving
To me this misses the problem.
I see the problem with the archive that any person can trawl
it for data
about any of us who have submitted messages, and that they
can thus obtain
details many of us would prefer not to be published.
The option "use the delete button" is not a useful one. The
correct option
is that the JISCMail system needs to be altered to protect
the individual
using it and contributing to its discussion lists. I would
suggest that the
current service is at best "quasi compliant" with the data
protection
legislation in this regard.
What I feel we need to have is attribution of messages on
the archive to a
list that only bona fide members can see, or a semi
anonymised list like
used on http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk
<http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk>
I have simple wishes:
* To receive mail form the list
* To participate or not at my volition
* To limit the exposure of my contact details to those who
have a bona fide
interest
I do not expect I am alone. I do expect to have a rash of
messages telling
me that I am in the minority, but oddly these will not come
from the
majority
