To me this misses the problem.
I see the problem with the archive that any person can trawl it for data
about any of us who have submitted messages, and that they can thus obtain
details many of us would prefer not to be published.
The option "use the delete button" is not a useful one. The correct option
is that the JISCMail system needs to be altered to protect the individual
using it and contributing to its discussion lists. I would suggest that the
current service is at best "quasi compliant" with the data protection
legislation in this regard.
What I feel we need to have is attribution of messages on the archive to a
list that only bona fide members can see, or a semi anonymised list like
used on http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk
I have simple wishes:
* To receive mail form the list
* To participate or not at my volition
* To limit the exposure of my contact details to those who have a bona fide
interest
I do not expect I am alone. I do expect to have a rash of messages telling
me that I am in the minority, but oddly these will not come from the
majority

Subject: Update on mail list administration for archiving
Thanks to all of your who replied with your very varying comments!
For the time being I have decided to leave the list open on the archives
which means anyone can browse but can only send and receive messages if
they join up as a member. In case you didn't know a large number of
people have joined this list through searching the archives!
The recent spam/junk mail where some members thought a user who called
himself [log in to unmask] had used the dp list had certainly
not done so by becoming a member, getting the list and then using it.
As always the advice with all junk/spam email is don't be curious and
don't open files EVER simply USE THE DELETE BUTTON and get on with life!
Remember you DO NOT have to participate, you can simply be a quiet
member but if do, you must be aware that all your messages will be
stored on the archive. In exceptional circumstances it may be possible
to manually remove a message or two, you can email if you have a problem
about this. This is not a service and JiscMail will only do this with a
very good reason!
The answers so some queries raised by members follows:-
Q>
# >My postings always have 'x-no-archive: yes' in the header, which
A>
# >As far as I'm aware, the "x-no-archive" and associated headers were
# >developed for the Usenet news protocol, not for standard listmailers
# >that is in use on this list. So the listmailer is probably incapable of
# >reacting to it.
Q>
# >all messages stored indefinitely... really, can *nothing* be done?
A>
Sorry at the moment nothing can be done. There is a new version of listserv
on it's way so with luck there may be a facility like this. We will have to
wait and see.
Q>
# >the search display most recent message first?
A> (JUST IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T VISITED THE WEB SITE FOR A WHILE...!)
Yes, Your list was changed so most recent message was displayed first.
Q>
# >"Since/Until" fields on the Search page suggest they should be filled
# >" WITH (date/time)".
A>
I have added this under the search box with the date. Hope it helps, let me
know if you want it any different.
Q>
# >arch(ives). I feel a bit short changed by your subject line ;-)
A>
This is for you to ask the members to maybe make their subjects more
meaningful. so MEMBERS if you can try and make a more succinct entry
in the subject field I think we would all find that useful (hope I
did that with this message...>!)
many thanks to Meg and JiscMail for looking into these queries
and thanks to all of you. Comments to me always welcome.
