Has this thread not missed a fairly major facet emanating from the issue
raised?
How does article 8 of the HRA impact on the collection and storage of the
gender information?
Given the degree of problems which arise in society today for persons who do
no immediately fit, would the individual involved not have a right to some
privacy in this matter?
How does the fact of what is recorded on their birth certificate affect what
should be recorded on their employment records following their operations?
Is the information from birth relevant in the circumstances of employement?
Would principle 3 not apply?
I seem to recall a human rights court case in the not too distant past about
this type of subject. The applicant won, and records had to be amended.
Unfortunately I cannot place my hands on it at the moment. Are any other
members of the group aware of that case and its name?

Graham,
I cannot quite believe that you have these views but if you are serious,
and I think you are, then it would be better keeping them to yourself
rather than putting them in writing, especially in a forum such as this.
Whilst I don't pretend to be an expert on the matter, I do know enough to
appreciate the difficulty experienced by someone that is transgendered. I
feel very sorry for anyone that is transgendered but not as sorry as I feel
for someone with the views you have expressed. Isn't a large part of data
protection supposed to be about the respect of the rights of the
individual? Haven't you heard of the Human Rights Act?

And I wonder if you have any idea how many people find the very concept
of cross-dressing distasteful and are seriously offended by people who
promote their own weird "rainbow alliance" lifestyles by denigrating
those of us who are married?
Whilst I would not agree with the Islamic scholars who call for the
transgendered and others suffering from birth defects to be slain, I
really don't want to have to think about such subjects each time I write
a letter. Toleration of alternate lifestyles is one thing, but please
don't make it compulsory!
