I have direct experience of this occurring with a member of staff. David
went away on holiday one summer and came back as Deborah. As far as college
records (personnel) were concerned 'she' was always recorded as female and
referred to as 'Ms'. There may be official (governmental) documents that
require the individual to continue to declare their original gender and the
person is better placed than us to know what these are, but for our purposes
I do not believe it has any bearing on how the individual is referred to
within the company or whether we record them as Male or Female .
Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms/Master/Sir/Lord are only titles given to an individual to
identify Gender and Rank.

I wonder if you have any idea how offensive "You could always try 'Dear Sir
or Madam'" could be to anyone reading this list or the archives who happens
to be Transgendered?

The case of A v the Chief Constable of the West Yorkshire Police and the
Secretary of State for Work and Pensions may be of interest, although it
relates to the definition of the gender for the purposes of employment. The
case also gets rather messy due to the matter of intimate body searches (as
it would!).
