Hello John
Remember that details of a person's trade union membership are sensitive
personal data under the DP Act. This reinforces Valerie's point about
consent - it looks like explicit consent is the only Schedule 3 condition
that would apply. Only guessing here, but I can't see staff timetable
information being useful to a TU without identifying the individuals -
presumably they want to be able to contact staff members and need to know
where they are at any particular time.
DP considerations aside, the whole area of providing info about employees to
TU's is a minefield. Many people have very strong feelings about TU's and
would be extremely angry if their information was passed to a TU without
their consent. This actually happened to my former employer, and it took a
long time to re-build the trust between employer and employees.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Release of data to TU's
We are seeking to establish recognition agreements with our TU's. Part of
the agreement will identify the data that the TU wants the college to pass
to them. Much of the data is general and non-personal but 2 items are, these
being (1)Names of staff being granted early retirement and (2)Access to
academic staff timetables.
I am reasonably happy about giving the info in point (2) but believe we
should not be passing the early retirement info to the TU.
Has anyone hit this one before (I am a new mwmbwer of the list so may have
missed earlier discussion)?
Your advice will be much appreciated.
