Why blame the poor ERO? They are simply doing their job within the law as it
stands. If you don't like it (and I don't) you should be addressing your
criticism to your MP and/or the government - that's the only way to get the
law changed.
And before anybody asks, I'm not an ERO, never have been, have no friends or
relatives who are either. My only interest is as a citizen whose data gets
peddled without his consent.

ensure that a potential election fraud is not being committed. >>

The right referred to here is a right to a **free** vote. Giving the
details
without giving the individuals the opportunity to opt out of marketing
material (they will be added to the "register for sale" automatically unless
they opt out) is likely to breach their human rights as well as the DPA. It
would be best to tell the individuals that you are required to give their
details - to the ERO, not the council, as Nicola rightly pointed out - under
the RPA2000 and ask if they would like to opt out of the junk mail list that
EROs sell to anyone who wants to buy them.
Incidentally, there is also likely to be a national version of the electoral
register which could earn a lot more money for those wishing to sell
marketing lists. The sooner we separate legally required voting data from
junk mailing, the better. How many European states have a voters' register
available fro public consumption? Answers on a postcard please to your
local
ERO.
