Prompted by a You and Yours programme on Radio 4 on internet fraud, I
sent this message to NCIS. For interest, I append their reply below.
Note the phrase: 'These emails are very common' - don't we just know it!
I think we have to accept that with the current level of technology it
is unlikely that JISCMail, or any other Listserver, will be able to
protect members email addresses from spam where the membership is open
to anyone. I generally simply use the delete key, just as I say no thank
you to cold callers on my telephone (or simply put the phone down).
As a member of the Unit that monitors the performance of JISCMail, I
draw list members attention to the sections on the JISCMail website
which give information about Junk mail, etc.

Where the sender is guilty of trying to carry out a fraud as in this
case, we can report it. (Mind you I think I would be hard put to find
the email address of 'my local fraud squad'!)
