We also use Deaf Alerters for deaf students, and use the same system for
paging Scecurity etc. It was originally suggested that deaf students could
use the same alerter (pager) in hall and elsewhere, but students were woken
in the middle of the night because their night unit was triggered by a fire
alarm in another part of the campus. We have now issue separate
building-specific pagers for use in Halls.

Here at UCLan we have "Deaf Alerter" pagers set up for use in teaching
buildings and student accommodation - and they also replace PA announcements
about library closing, etc. They seem to work well enough - but a
disadvantage is that they sometimes page students about alarms in buildings
other than the one they happen to be in at the time. It's also a little
disconcerting to see all the deaf students suddenly get up and troop out
before the fire drill alarm sounds, and some of them now have a reputation
as fortune-tellers.

Try contacting North Tyneside College in Newcastle (ken.
[log in to unmask]). They have had a system of
pagers for some time and use them not just for fire alarm
purposes (for staff, students - including evening classes)
but also as emergency alarms.
