Rhun,
My practical experience tells me (as a previous manager of Summer Schools in
Spain), that although your assumption that the same provision should be
provided in Spain is indeed correct, in reality, this is very hard to
deliver - so sending all the equipment there (+ funding setup on campus)
seems a reasonable and viable option.
If a laptop was a viable option in relation to the student's needs, and the
cost of hire did not excessively exceed delivery costs (which will be
substantial), I might be tempted to look at it. The laptop, in this case,
does appear to be something that should not be dismissed out of hand as it
is being suggested in particular relation to the practicalities of this
stage of the course (abroad). Obvously we wouldn't buy one - though some
anticipation of the students study needs and the recommendation of a laptop
originally may have avoided the problems you're having now (speak to the
assessor on that one!)
Another tip for the student - if you are having equipment shipped - make
sure you have absolutely precise delivery locations and times. No mean feat
in parts of Spain!
