Interesting numbers. Buy why the GBP? Shouldn't we all think Euros?
It would also be worth finding out how much the EU spends in this area.
It is supposed to be a part of their activity. And they have certainly
funded AlphaGalileo, which really is a Public Engagement with Science and
Technology (PEST) activity.

Subject: Re: Expenditures on Public understanding of Science in UK
Thank you all for your help (especially: Robin Gregg, Fiona Selkirk, Peter
Briggs, Michael Kenward, and Caroline Hurren) on my question about
expenditures on PUS in the UK. It is indeed a complex matter.
But to give you also some other information I found. In the Netherlands we
estimate that approx. in total 100 million guilders (approx. 30 million GBP)
is being spend on PUS. In France the ministery of research (Ministere de la
Recherche) allocated approx. 4 million GBP in 2000 for PUS (increase of 24%
compared to 1999). But as in the UK this is only a part of the complete
picture. Some figures I was able to find:
The French science festival has a budget of 1 million GBP; the budget of the
biggest French science centre "La Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie" was
in 2000: 70 million GBP, 51 million GBP paid by the French governement. The
Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle had a budget of 7.5 million GBP in
2000.
May be it would be a good idea to do some real research in this matter (e.g.
comparing different countries).
Well have a nice weekend!
