Warning to all potential communicators, Weidenfeld and Nicolson is almost
certainly an exception to the rule, but book publishing has a reputation for
paying even lower salaries than the rest of the media.
I notice that this one omits such tiny details as the salary. Doubtless an
oversight. Do check before raising any great expectations.

JOB TITLE: Editorial Assistant

JOB PURPOSE
To assist the Science Publishing Director and an Editorial Director.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
* Managing titles from manuscript to production. This includes, where
necessary, picture research, preparation of front matter, proof collation
and basic copyediting.
* Ensuring that the two editors' offices function efficiently.
* Collating proofs, checking jacket copy and Ai's.
* Booking in copyeditors, proofreaders and indexers.
* Dealing with US publishers to make sure offset material is received
on time.
* Generating contracts (under supervision), ensuring material (cover
proofs, author copies etc) is sent to authors, dealing with authors and
agents on general administrative matters.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS
* Six months minimum as an assistant in publishing.
* Communication skills: oral and written. Good telephone manner.
* Administration skills.
* Numerate.
* Using computers: Word processing and spreadsheets.
* Using office equipment (fax, photocopier, phones).
* Broad general knowledge of publishing.
* An interest in general non-fiction, science and history would be an
advantage.
