We have an applicant coming next academic year who wants to
do structural or mechanical engineering. We were unsure
whether the support we'll be able to provide will make the
course accessible, so at the start of this academic year he
came in for a two week trial. We weren't able to access
DSAs to fund this as he was not even an applicant at this
stage, but the Faculty found some funds.
The trial went well and he went on to apply formally to
UWE. The area where he had most difficulty was maths, as he
found it very difficult to visualise formulae in his mind.
There were some Health and Safety issues over which we had
concerns e.g. welding, but the applicant worked with the
lab technicians and demonstrated that there would be no
risk to his own safety or that of others. That said the
applicant used to work in Engineering and had only lost his
sight in the last year, so he is already skilled in this
area.
I know that Loughborough University had a blind student who
completed an Engineering degree recently, so you might want
to contact them.
Hope this helps.
