Clare,
You can turn off the spell checker in word, go to tools, options then
spelling and grammar and untick all the boxes. you will also need to remove
the icon from the tool bar. right click anywhere on the grey icon area
select customise. With the customise box open click and drag icon from
toolbar. To remove it from the tools menu do the same. After the exam use
reset in the customise dialogue box this should reset back to the normal.doc
template.
other wise get the student to use WordPad and not word.

Subject: computers in exams
Can anyone suggest how to provide a computer (word processer) without
spellchecker in exams? This is needed for a dyslexic student on a course
where spelling and grammar are part of the learning objectives. The student
wants to use a computer (which we permit) but it would be seen as giving an
"unfair advantage" to permit spell-checking.
We use Word 97 on Windows NT. Our IT Services advisor suggested using
notepad instead of Word.
Thanks, Clare
