The payment system is very clearly outlined in the CACDP directory, let me
know if you want a copy faxed Paula and I will do my best! ASLI (Association
of Sign Language Interpreters) have also just launched a new directory and I
guess (although I don't have it with me now) that a similar guideline is
given.
It also depends who the interpreter was booked through, but whoever they
were booked through should have an agreement probably based on CACDP
guidelines in which case the LEA should be referred to the booking official
concerned for explanation of cancellation rights.
Hope this helps
Chris

Subject: Payment ofcancellation fees for BSL interpreters
Dear All
I would welcome any advice on the predicament of one of Leicester's
full-time PG students who is a BSL user. The LEA has agreed payment for
interpreter fees, but it will not pay for 'any time at which the service was
cancelled for any reason' as they put it in a letter. They say that they
cannot/will not pay for a service she did not receive.
The student's understanding is that if the cancellation occurs at less than
2 weeks notice the interpreter should receive half the fee, if less than a
week the full fee. She argues that if she cannot promise payment of
cancellation fees, interpreters will refuse to work for her.
I have agreed to write to the LEA to contest their decision and have been
trying the specialist agencies (RNID, NATED, NCDS) to see if they have any
best practice guidelines which I could send to the LEA to illustrate and
prove the point.
My questions are:
1) Do you think that the student's understanding is correct?
2) Does anyone have anything on best practice with regard to interpreters
and their fees that I could send to the LEA?
3) Does anyone have similar experiences?
For information: NATED is sending me something; the RNID does not have
anything and suggested I ask SKILL which I have and they have suggested
dis-forum(!), and I am still trying to get through to NDCS. I have also
emailed CACDP.
Best wishes
Paula
