AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES EMPLOYER

DEPARTMENT OF STUDENT SERVICES

Support Worker Service

The fundamental role of Student Services is to contribute to and enhance the
educational and personal development of all our students in a welcoming
environment. A number of challenging and exciting opportunities exist
within our Support Worker Service to provide assistance to disabled students
and Deaf students in relation to their educational studies at the
Universities of Northumbria and Newcastle. Your success in the support that
you can offer will certainly make a significant difference to our overall
contribution in this area. In return we will provide you with a rewarding
experience. The posts will be part time, term time only in the first
instance.

Team Leader - Grade D £15,162 - £17,098 per annum (pro rata) Ref. S87/01

You will provide educational support to disabled or Deaf students on a one
to one basis at any of the University's sites, enabling student
participation in all teaching and learning provision. You will also have a
key role in the effective day-to-day organisation of the Support Worker
Service. This will include establishing and maintaining an excellent
administrative timetabling system to ensure that student requirements are
met. You will have a specific responsibility to supervise the Educational
Personal Assistants working within the team and therefore preferably be able
to demonstrate at least one year's experience in a similar role, and have
some supervisory experience.

An excellent communicator you will have the ability to work with a wide
range of people at different levels within the organisation. You will be
educated to degree/vocational equivalent level or have proven business
experience and have a particular interest in working with disabled and Deaf
students. Interviews will take place on 21 August 2001.

Educational Personal Assistant (Notetaker) - Grade B £12,402 - £13,308 per
annum (pro rata) Ref. S88/01
Educational Personal Assistant - Grade A £10,436 - £12,154 per annum (pro
rata) Ref. S89/01

A number of part time, term time only vacancies will exist for assistants to
work with disabled and Deaf students. You will have experienced working
with disabled or Deaf people and, preferably, you will also have worked or
studied in either a Further or Higher Education environment. Your daily
duties will depend upon the requirements of the student(s) you are
supporting and can typically include researching information under the
direction of the student such as locating books, journals, websites,
reading, photocopying and undertaking dictated work from the student.

As a Notetaker you will mainly be required to take accurate notes from
lectures, seminars, workshops, etc so must be educated to degree or
equivalent level and possess CACDP Level II Notetaker Certificate or be
willing to undertake this training.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential together with
the ability to work flexibly to ensure that the best service is provided to
our students. Interviews will take place on 20 August 2001.
